Modern Apprenticeships


With over 36,000 Modern Apprentices in training in Scotland, there’s an enormous choice for frameworks and delivery. Employers gain qualified and motivated staff. Employees gain confidence and know-how through work-based learning. Currently there is even funding through Skills Development Scotland towards the cost of training for most Modern Apprentices.

We have focused our efforts on adding value to employers and employees in fast-moving and often challenging environments, such as:

Everything we do is about creating a ‘can do’ world in which people do their jobs better and therefore perform better. We use Modern Apprenticeships as established frameworks to deliver recognised, work-based qualifications for staff in a time and cost-effective way.

Our innovative and blended approach includes face-to-face workshops, e-learning programmes and projects so our Modern Apprentices have the skills and know-how they need to successfully complete their learning and do their job better.

You know you’re in a safe pair of hands with our experts at pbLearning. We achieve around 90% success rates with our clients’ Modern Apprentices – that’s 9 out of 10 who complete their training. Compare that to the 78% average* in Scotland and you’ll see the difference.





We can do flexible.

Our clients sometimes like to throw us challenges. So, we’ve become quite adept at thinking on our feet and coming up with work-based learning solutions that meet our clients’ and our Modern Apprentices’ needs but aren’t quite ‘the norm’.

For example, our face-to-face training, our e-portfolio system with 24/7 access, our reporting tools and tracking systems set us apart and help to ensure our learners are successful.

Our SCQF level 5, 6, 7 or 8 Modern Apprentices typically complete their training in 9 to 12 months which, given the positive impact they can have on your business for years to come, is a great return.

How we work

We’ve told you that we can do. But how do we do it? Here’s our process.

How we work

1. Explore.

We get to know you, your company and the specific needs and wants you have from a work-based learning Modern Apprenticeship programme.

2. Engage.

We engage with your staff to make sure that they understand what the Modern Apprenticeship will mean for them and we carry out an initial assessment to tailor the learning so that it’s absolutely relevant for each Modern Apprentice.

3. Arrange.

We handle all the paperwork and any funding so that each Modern Apprentice can get started. We liaise with the Modern Apprentice and their manager to map out the journey ahead so they understand it fully.
How we work

4. Organise.

We put in place all the resources Modern Apprentices will need – both online and offline. We take into account any individual needs they may have and offer both guidance and recommendations on various forms of training and assessment to suit.

5. Guide.

We provide the new Modern Apprentice with a dedicated point of contact in the form of their assessor who will take them through their qualification from start to finish. We plan and discuss each assessment in advance so that the assessor, the Modern Apprentice and their manager (if appropriate) can plan ahead and make any necessary arrangements prior to assessment.

6. Assess.

Your Modern Apprentices are assessed and learn during work time, on-the-job. Our assessors help them gain the confidence and know-how they need to realise their full potential and address skills gaps in your business. Our training is packed with relevant skills and, at the end of it all, there’s an industry-recognised qualification.
How we work

7. Monitor.

Each assessor holds regular meetings with their Modern Apprentices and managers offering opportunity to ask questions, gain clarification and keep them informed of progress. This also allows the assessor to give the Modern Apprentice feedback or simply provide extra support.

8. Embed.

As they complete their qualification, we help each Modern Apprentice to make best use of their strengths. The action plans we make and the conversations we have provide a road map for their continued development, helping them perform better and continue to add value to the business.
